Brother and Sister and Alcohol Abuse

Alcoholism is a problem that knows no social boundary. When one thinks of a drunk, the vision of a stinking, struggling old homeless dude might come to mind – a person who has lost everything because of his drinking habit. It is true that there are people out on the street because their addiction to alcohol took them that far down the road to poverty. When their brains get so used to having alcohol, then nothing else – not family, not respect, not a job or a house or a reputation – matters anymore. It’s a leech that cries out for more, more.

It’s sad when you think about the fact that there are people dying in other countries from starvation. Most of the people on this planet of ours do not even have the items that a typical American would consider necessities, such as a roof over their heads, too much food with too many options, too many clothes, a car, and entertainment devices out the wazoo. And yet, there is a dissatisfaction that leads so many Americans to drink in order to forget their woes, or bring them temporary joy.

In a story out of Delaware County, a 22-year-old man named Sean Owen O’Neill Jr of Glen Mills lost control of his black Cadillac, plunged down an embankment, smashed into two other cars, and then crashed into the garage of a house. This is not the first time that young Sean had problems with drinking. When he was only 18, he accidentally shot and killed his best friend during a drinking party.

Sean has gone through two residential treatment programs since then, but he obviously must still be having difficulties that were not addressed. His sister has also had difficulties with alcohol abuse, and she is serving a 5-10 year prison term for causing a crash that killed a 63 year old woman.
