Lawsuit for Stop Smoking Drug

Pfizer Inc. makes and markets a drug with some unusual properties. Chantix has the ability to stop any pleasurable sensations derived from smoking cigarettes. In fact, it can make cigarettes just plain horrible things.

How it does this is unknown exactly, but it seems to affect the pleasure centers in the brain and block any stimulation from nicotine. And that’s a good thing if you want to quit smoking… unless it also causes severe depression and psychosis.

A lawsuit filed in Pittsburgh this month alleges just that. After taking Chatix to stop smoking, Sean Wain fatally shot his wife and then himself. Sounds like a stretch until you read Pfizer’s own literature which states, in part, “Serious neuropsychiatric events including, but not limited to depression, suicidal ideation, suicide attempt and completed suicide have been reported in patients taking CHANTIX.” The warning goes on for several more paragraphs, mentioning hostility and other serious consequences, even after patients stop taking the drug.

My personal experience with the drug mirrors the above. While I stopped it after the first dose and never got any suicidal thoughts, I certainly experienced some very bizarre feelings. They are difficult to describe other than feeling “outside of yourself” and disconnected – in a very bad way. I don’t know what it feels like to be psychotic, but I could tell the drug was messing with my internal equanimity.

It did absolutely stop any desire to smoke. It turned what had been a pleasant habit into torture and changed how I perceived smoking. All in all, very scary-- to have a drug reach down into your inner self and make profound alterations.

Pfizer has responded to the suit saying they were not aware of the side effects until post-marketing reports illuminated them. This is disputed in the lawsuit which claims they did know the risks from previous studies.
