Ten Months Later -- Investigation Nets Five in Burgettstown

Last February, police in the Pittsburg suburb of Burgettstown got a tip about crack sales. In the ten months that followed, they managed to make three undercover buys from the location. It all came to a head December 18th with a raid involving eight vehicles full of police. They swarmed the location and arrested five people on drug possession and intent to deliver charges. One of the five, Iesha Hackett, will get additional charges for concealing drugs in a “body cavity.” Police transported her to Washington Hospital to obtain those drugs.

Seized was more than an ounce total of crack and cocaine, along with an undisclosed amount of cash and a small amount of marijuana.

The operation relied on the joint efforts of State Police, A K-9 unit (also state), Mount Pleasant Township police and the MacDonald police department. Burgettstown contracts with the MP police for services – a good deal in this case.

One question remains. Why ten months to bust one location? It’s a continuing problem for police and prosecutors – the decision as to whether to gather more evidence by letting criminal activity continue or to swoop down as soon as any type of case at all can be made. There is no easy answer that will satisfy everyone. The more evidence, the longer defendants are likely to stay in jail and the better the chance for conviction. On the other hand, certainly there were other tragedies that could have been prevented if the group hadn’t been selling for those ten months.

In any case, this represents another step in the continuing efforts to clean up Burgettstown and keep the hardcore stuff away. At least as far away as Pittsburg.
